It is widely accepted that information and communication technologies (ICT) play an important role in all our lives. The pandemic and subsequent lockouts have underlined the usefulness of technology in our daily lives, as individuals, including older people who are not familiar with technology, have turned to tablets and computers to communicate, connect with friends and keep in touch with their grandchildren. While most of the population finds it hard to imagine life without the Internet, digital illiteracy remains a persistent issue among older people. Despite advances, many older people lack the opportunities and knowledge to navigate the Internet and technology effectively. The desire to communicate is the primary expectation that older people have of technology, with information taking a back seat. Attitudes towards learning in old age and the adoption of new technologies vary, with the majority holding a neutral attitude. While most older people have a mobile phone, the transition to smartphones can be hindered by several factors. Some resist change due to fear and unfamiliarity, while others may express a negative attitude, fearing failure or hesitating to ask for help. There is a range of attitudes towards technology among older people, with some perceiving it as potentially harmful to society based on observations of their grandchildren’s screen-focused activities. Others have a negative view due to a lack of understanding, not recognizing the potential benefits that technology could bring to their daily lives. Bridging the digital literacy gap and promoting a positive perception of technology among senior citizens is vital to ensure their active participation and well-being in an increasingly digital world.

Participants of this adult course first of all they will understand and identify the needs and challenges faced by senior citizens in relation to new technologies. Also, participants will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to address digital illiteracy among older individuals and strategies to teach older population in the use of new technologies. Participants, through this course, will explore ways in which technology can enhance communication, foster social connections, and contribute to the overall well-being of older individuals. The course will provide insights on fostering a positive mindset, overcoming fears of failure, and encouraging a willingness to seek assistance and will inspire participants to create inclusive digital communities for seniors, with specific tools, considering their diverse needs.
This course, will conduct multi-tasking activities and involvement, so all the participants will gain all the insights that they need to be well informed and prepared. They will understand better the existing situation for new technologies and older ages and will identify the need – needs of older people in technology use. Theory and practical exercises will provide participants with knowledge, information and practical experience, so they could search for effective strategies. Role-playing exercises and simulated scenarios will give interactive sessions to participants and ideas how to educate older people to use new technologies with a more joinable way. Participants will be encouraged to find creative solutions and facilitate group presentations to share findings and insights. At last, tools and platforms will be presented as a huge help for everyone that want to integrate this course into their work skills or to disseminate the best practices.
