Understanding and Combating Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive issue in all societies worldwide, manifesting itself in various forms and affecting people regardless of age, nationality or origin. Deeply rooted in gender inequality, this disturbing phenomenon poses a significant threat to the well-being of countless individuals. At its core, gender-based violence is an act of aggression directed at a person on the basis of their gender, with women and girls disproportionately bearing the brunt of its impact. It includes all forms of gender-based violence that either lead to or have the potential to cause physical, sexual, psychological or economic harm and suffering to women. Such acts, ranging from physical assault to the infliction of emotional distress, are not only morally reprehensible, but also fundamentally undermine the principles of equality and dignity inherent in the concept of human rights. Addressing and eradicating violence against women is imperative to promoting a society that upholds the values of justice, equality and respect for the rights and well-being of all its members. It is estimated that in Greece, 25% of women have experienced violence, 8% lower than in the EU as a whole. Gender-based violence is a major obstacle to achieving gender equality. Its far-reaching effects extend beyond individual victims, affecting entire communities. It not only hinders personal achievement in professional and educational pursuits, but also has a detrimental effect on overall productivity. Addressing gender-based violence is vital not only to ensure individual rights but also to create a society that promotes equality, safety and collective well-being.
