Integration of immigrant children in the cross-cultural education

Multiculturalism is the policy or practices of giving equal treatment to the cultural needs and contributions of all groups in a society. Special attention may be given to minority groups that were not represented in the past, such as immigrants. At present, the waves of immigration are massive in all countries and in every culture. Immigration does not imply economic hardship, but also the attempt to find better conditions and work according to the personal expectations of each individual or family. The main receivers of these expectations are the children of immigrants, who have to face changes that others have chosen for them, especially in the school environment. Children, due to their lack of knowledge, experience, and information about immigration, find it difficult to understand the existence of different cultures within the school environment, the neighbourhood and society in general, especially if their parents or the wider environment has not developed a culture of multiculturalism and new approaches. Teachers, play a very important role in the acceptance of immigrant children, in understanding different cultures and of course in managing emotional difficulties that come from multiculturalism. It is necessary to provide information, education and awareness about immigration and the existence of multiculturalism in schools in order to bridge the gap between cultures and to ensure the well-being, smooth interaction, and personal development of children.
